  1. Ghostbusters: An Oral History
  2. The Painful What-If That Haunts ‘Ghostbuster’ Ernie Hudson

Annie Potts Imagines Janine’s Future

janinefirehousegb30

Vanity Fair spoke with Annie Potts who portrayed then receptionist Janine Melnitz in Ghostbusters™ and Ghostbusters II™. Annie Potts was asked where she saw the future of the character.

Interesting since Janine Melnitz is one of the most important people in Ghostbusters Incorporated history. I totally get that Annie Potts wouldn’t publicly give out details about Janine Melnitz’s life.

Short, But Not Pointless

People Magazine (it’ll always be a magazine to me) celebrated Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary by talking to Annie Potts, who for ghostheads is well known for playing our then receptionist, today Senior Administrator Janine Melnitz.

Here are some things from the conversation:

  • Finds Ghostbusters fans who suit up in flight suits and wear prop replicas “interesting.”
  • She had “the best time” working with Harold Ramis.
  • Bill Murray “would win the prize” for being the funniest guy in any room.
  • Her children don’t care she played a very important person to this day in one of the highest grossing comedies based on real life events.

That’s how I read that last one anyway.

  • Favorite personal character Ghostbusters quote comes from her frustration with Dr. Venkman not hiring more help which means Janine can’t take a day off.

Ghostbusters Commercial Alternate Takes

rayfilmingcomwithjanine

One of the most famous commercials in movie history comes from Ghostbusters. Without it, we wouldn’t have seen the power of advertising. Conveniently a TV that was mysteriously left on for Dana (foreshadowing) let her know who to call (and with no address or obvious map) how to get to this new GHOSTBUSTERS business.

Before their can be a movie based on real events or a commercial, it has to be filmed. Sure my employers had a real commercial, it would have looked a little out of place with the rest of Ghostbusters being those comedic actors.

Also because Columbia Pictures hadn’t worked out the movie rights for the name GHØSTBUSTERS from those other fictional guys and a deal hadn’t been finalized with the Ghostbusters, all those involved with filming Ghostbusters filmed alternate takes with different “business” names. Ya know, just in case and it wouldn’t need to be re-filmed (which might not have been as great) in post production.
